In collaboration with Statistics Netherlands (CBS), we published an article on the demography of same-sex parents in the Netherlands. In the year that marks 25 years of same-sex marriage in the Netherlands, this topic is particularly timely. Some key highlights:
- The number of same-sex parent couples increased nearly sixfold between 1995 and 2024
- Around 90% are two-mother couples, while two-father couples remain a small minority
- Same-sex parent couples tend to have fewer children and have children at older ages
- Age differences between partners are larger, especially among two-father couples
- Two-mother couples are more often highly educated, while income patterns differ between groups
